And along the bike path...
And it was good.

The Great American Watermelon Hunt
Every year around the Fourth of July I plan a treasure hunt for the kids. And the treasure? A watermelon. What could be better when you are hot and tired on summer's day!
Here we are just starting out...
And then, the hunt began... and we started looking for the clues that had been planted all around town. By the big elk...
By the gazebo in the park...
Thank goodness there were people along that already knew how to read. They were a BIG help...
We passed by old friends, like Hazie in front of the library. (the clue was behind her book on her lap)
We crossed bridges...
We looked all around local springs...
And down by the train tracks...
We climbed over sculptures....
We had to take some breaks because it was SO hot and SO hard....
But in the end, it was worth it. Because WE FOUND A WATERMELON!!!!!
And we ate it...

ReplyDeleteWe did a watermelon hunt a few years ago, but we pretended that we were looking for a dinosaur egg. The outside of the watermelon was painted with blue washable paint speckles.
Was a blast but some of the kids did not want to eat what they thought was a dinosaur egg.
Some suggested that instead, we should take it to a museum!
Will need to try it again, this time telling the neighbor kids that we are looking for a watermelon.
